The fence

I found my way home but it was not until summer
ended that my mother brought herself to ask me
to make good the fence that marks our boundary.
I went out there with a box of nails and a hammer
and when a flock of crows in the trees surrounding
made some comment, I remembered how the birds
living by Shamash Gate spoke in perfect harmony
with mortar shells falling. Then I began knocking
nails into the wood and everything near took fright
although not my mother, who continued watching
from her chair on the porch. I have said nothing yet
of what it is like to reach the exact point where one
place becomes another, with no way forward or back,
and there is nothing else left to do except fall down.

Encontré mi camino a casa pero no fue sino hasta que terminó
el verano que mi madre tuvo el valor de pedirme
que arreglara la verja que marca nuestra frontera.
Salí con una caja de clavos y un martillo
y cuando una parvada de cuervos en los árboles aledaños
comentaron algo, recordé cómo los pájaros
que viven junto a Shamash Gate hablaban en perfecta armonía
mientras caían proyectiles de mortero. Luego comencé a golpear
los clavos en la madera y todo alrededor se espantó
aunque no mi madre, quien seguía mirando
desde su silla en el porche. Aún no he hablado
de cómo se siente llegar al punto exacto
donde un lugar se convierte en otro, sin atrás ni adelante,
y no queda nada por hacer sino caerse.
 

Andrew Motion (Londres, 1952). Fue Poeta Laureado de 1999 a 2009, y es cofundador y codirector del sitio web Poetry Archive. En 2015 fue invitado como profesor residente en Johns Hopkins University. Ha recibido numerosos premios por su obra poética, entre los que se incluye, este año, el Ted Hughes Award. Ha publicado cuatro biografías aclamadas por la crítica, la novela The Invention of Dr. Cake (Faber & Faber, 2003) y las memorias In the Blood (Faber & Faber, 2006).
